Shropshire jobs will be created as Blueprints are being drawn up

June 1, 2016 by Julie McGrath

Shropshire jobs will be created as three major development sites are the subject of discussions.

Shropshire Council has confirmed it is talking to the owners of Copthorne Barracks in Shrewsbury, Clive Barracks at Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, and Ironbridge Power Station in an effort to ensure any development of the sites is “sustainable”. This development will create many Shropshire Jobs should the plans go ahead.

Councillor Malcolm Price, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member responsible for planning, said the developments should include employment and potentially community facilities rather than just housing.

“The council will put the plans together in conjunction with the owners responsible for the sites. We want to maximise the use of these sites.

“The easy avenue for those sites would be just to go for housing, which is not appropriate.

Both Clive and Copthorne Barracks are owned by the Ministry of Defence.

The Tern Hill site is being sold as part of an MoD drive to generate more money, and help the Government provide land for 7,000 homes. It has been anticipated that up to 600 homes could be built at the site, which is currently home to the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment.

The Copthorne site was marketed for sale as a mixed use site last year, but despite several offers the Ministry of Defence decided to take it off the market to develop an outline planning application.

Once that is complete the MoD says it will be offered for sale.

Ironbridge Power Station is owned by energy firm E.ON and ceased production in November after 46 years.

Councillor Price said that comprehensive plans for the future of the sites are essential.

He said: “They will be more sustainable if it is a mixture use site and particularly containing employment.

“We have a lot of housing being built in the county and we need more employment sites which in turn will create more Jobs in Shropshire.

“None of this will be done overnight, we are talking a number of years but we need to start planning for the future and it is an ideal opportunity.”

The cabinet member said the authority would also be looking at the development of other sites across the country to learn about schemes that have been successful.

He said: “It may be with the former military sites there are others around the country where there is some best practice and we can look at whet they are doing and what has worked well.”

A spokesman for the MoD confirmed that discussions are taking place on the future development of the sites.

Speaking about its Copthorne site, Emma Sloper of the MoD said: “The MoD is working with its agents JLL to consider submitting an outline planning application to Shropshire Council for re-development of the site. It will then be marketed later this year or early in 2017.”

On the subject of the Clive Barracks, she said: “The MoD will work closely with the local authority and other interested parties

Roxanne Postle, a spokesman for Uniper which is in charge of Ironbridge Power Station, also confirmed the company is in the process of looking at the potential future uses of the site.

She said: “Our current focus is on the decommissioning phase at Ironbridge Power Station which is due to run until 2017.

“We are beginning the process of exploring future options for the site. These are early stage considerations and further details regarding the future use of the Ironbridge site will be given as appropriate.”

The Ministry of Defence revealed it would sell Copthorne Barracks in 2014 after large areas had been left surplus to requirements following the departure of the 143 Brigade.

When Copthorne Barracks was initially marketed it was advertised as 16 hectares, including a range of buildings, living accommodation, and sports facilities – including sports pitches and tennis courts.

The barracks were built between 1877 and 1881 and initially included a hospital.

It was originally the depot of the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.

Construction work on Ironbridge Power Station began in 1962.

The plant was originally designed to run on coal and at full capacity was capable of generating up to 1000MW from two 500MW units.

It was later converted to biomass and the electrical output was reduced to 740MW. But only one of the two units had been operational following a fire in 2014 and capacity was further reduced to 370MW.

There were 130 workers on site when the plant closed last November. A small team of 14 was to be kept on after the shutdown to oversee a 15-month period of the decommissioning of the plant.

The closure of the power station was required by the EU’s Large Combustion Plant Directive.

Shropshire jobs

Clive Barracks in Tern Hill is currently home to the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, but the base is expected to be sold by 2020.

The 1st Battalion, which has been based at the barracks near Market Drayton since 2007, will be forced to move to an as yet unknown location – putting its future in Shropshire in doubt.

The MoD is releasing 10 sites across the country as part of a bid to increase the efficiency of the defence department’s estate, and as a contribution to the Government’s target of releasing enough public sector land for 160,000 homes by 2020.

It is hoped the sales will generate a total of £140 million, which the Government says will be invested into the defence budget.

Announcing the sale, Defence Minister Mark Lancaster said: “Every pound we make by disposing of excess land will be reinvested into a defence budget that keeps Britain safe.

“It will make the defence estate more efficient and better suited to the needs of our armed forces. it will help thousands of people to own their own home.”

Major investment to create almost 300 new jobs in Telford

May 25, 2016 by Julie McGrath

Telford & Wrekin Council today welcomed the announcement that Magna International Inc plans to build a new world class aluminium casting facility at T54.

Council welcomes Magna International announcement

Councillor Shaun Davies, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Business, hailed the announcementas an “extremely significant” day for the borough of Telford and Wrekin.

“I am delighted that Magna International has decided to locate its new multi-million pound facility here in Telford,” said Councillor Davies.

“This signals the dawn of a bright new era of opportunity for everyone in the borough. In Telford, we pride ourselves on being inventive and dynamic and the details of the high tech production process Magna has announced for its planned facility shows that they are a perfect fit for us.

“We have been talking to Magna International for more than two years and an awful lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes to make this possible so today is a realisation of all those discussions.

“I would like to thank everyone at the Council who has been involved in those negotiations – from the first contact at a national conference through to the conclusion of the deal in the last few weeks.

“This has been made possible as a result of the land deal that we announced in March with the Homes and Communities Agency and the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership, which will see us deliver 8500 new jobs through investing in bringing sites like T54 to the market.

“Magna’s announcement today represents a hugely significant multi-million pound investment which demonstrates that Telford & Wrekin Council’s drive to attract new business and jobs is realising spectacular results. “This major development will see the creation of 295 skilled local jobs when the plant is at full capacity.  The investment will also support many more jobs in the local supply chain.

“It also demonstrates the value of our strengthening links with the West Midlands and its world wide reputation for advanced manufacturing. With the T54 site just 12 miles from Jaguar Land Rover’s i54 complex, we are seeing significant levels and enquiries and we are confident more market leaders from the automotive supplies sector will be investing in Telford.

“Magna’s proposed world class aluminium casting facility in Telford will be the  largest automotive development in the West Midlands after the Jaguar Land Rover complex at the i54 site. We confidently expect that this will prove a gateway for further investment in the T54 site, which is already home to AXYZ Automation and Filtermist International.

“Subject to receiving planning permission, we expect that construction on the new facility will begin in the autumn of this year. Magna has said production will begin in 2018.”

T54 is Telford and Wrekin’s flagship automotive and advanced manufacturing employment site.

Telford bridges technology gap ahead of schedule.

May 23, 2016 by Julie McGrath

Boost for tourism as Superfast Telford bridges technology gap at Ironbridge ahead of schedule. Hundreds of households and businesses in historic Ironbridge will be able to connect to faster fibre broadband earlier than expected, thanks to the £5.6 million Superfast Telford partnership.
Lead partners Telford & Wrekin Council and BT today confirmed around 500 properties in the area will get access to the technology from the Summer, as part of the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, with many more able to benefit in the months that follow.

It is hoped the arrival of the new technology at the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution around nine months early will be a huge boost for tourism and the local community.

Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Making superfast fibre broadband available to around 950 households and businesses in Ironbridge has always been a key aim of the partnership.

“Close collaboration with other important projects going on in this sensitive area of the borough, including the upgrading of The Wharfage and Tontine Hill, has enabled us to complete the necessary planning and survey work much earlier than planned and accelerate this part of the Superfast Telford rollout.”

Colin Bannon, BT’s regional director for the West Midlands, said: “Our project teams are working extremely hard to ensure the majority of the engineering work is completed as quickly as possible so many people wanting to order an upgrade can start enjoying the benefits before the main holiday season gets in full swing.

“We also wanted to minimise disruption and maximise opportunities for local businesses, households and visitors at this busy time of the year.”

Superfast Telford began connecting the first homes and businesses just before Christmas. The roll-out has continued at a pace with 1,200 properties now able to access faster fibre broadband.

By the end of 2017, this figure will rise to around 9,300 households and businesses, with 8,800 of them able to access ‘superfast’ download speeds of 24 megabits (Mbps) and above.

When combined with the private sector’s commercial investment, it means 98 per cent of homes and businesses in the borough will be able to access high-speed fibre broadband by the end of next year.

Local households opting for an upgrade will be able to order fibre broadband with download speeds of up to 80Mbps and uploads of up to 20Mbps*.

The network being installed by Openreach – BT’s local network business – will enable people to choose from a wide range of broadband service providers.

Unemployment falls in Shropshire

May 22, 2016 by Julie McGrath

Unemployment fell in Shropshire last month, as the jobs market in the county took a positive turn.

In three of the previous four months the number of people on different types of out-of-work benefits had risen, but it declined in both Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin during April.

Shropshire Council’s area saw the number of people on benefit drop from 1,945 in March to 1,870, whereas Telford’s figure was flat, with 1,650 people signing on in April compared to 1,655 in March.

In Powys, 790 people were on benefit, down from 875 in March.

The figures reflected a national decline in the number of people out of work, with the national claimant count down by 2,400 last month to 737,8000, although revised data showed the figure rose by 14,700 between February and March, the highest total since autumn 2011.

Job vacancies were down by 18,000 to 745,000, the first fall for almost a year.

Unemployment dipped by just 2,000 in the quarter to March to 1.69 million, a fall of 139,000 over the past year.

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Stephen Crabb said: “These are another record-breaking set of figures, with more people in work than ever before and the unemployment rate is the lowest in a decade at 5.1 per cent.

“More people in work means that more families across the UK are benefiting from the security of a regular wage and the fulfilment that employment brings.

“But the job is not done, which is why our welfare reforms, such as Universal Credit, are making sure that it always pays to be in work.”

When broken down by parliamentary constituency, Ludlow has 395 people out of work, North Shropshire 745, and Shrewsbury & Atcham 670.

In Telford, 1,150 people are on benefits, with another 560 in The Wrekin, part of which is in Shropshire.

Graffiti Geek Review

December 8, 2015 by Julie McGrath

A review by our intern illustrator Shanice.

Shanice uses a graphics tablet to produce some of her illustrations this is what she has to say about her choose medium. Shanice is currently completing her apprenticeship in Business administration and Marketing.

Age of the Graphics Tablet

In a world where technology is ever increasing and changing the way we live, a majority of artists whether hobbyists of professionals have even changed the way they create artwork. If you wanted to make a painting you would gather all the equipment you need whether it was acrylics, watercolours or oil paints along with paint brushes and some water. Afterwards you would have to clean everything up and that often takes time depending on what you’re using. However, thanks to the graphics tablet and powerful drawing software that imitates drawing materials people can now make wonderful pieces of artwork all with the strokes from a stylus.
