5 Fantastic Ways of Using JavaScript

September 29, 2016 by Julie McGrath

JavaScript is becoming increasingly used with the progression of modern technology!

If you were a writing code for the web over 10 years ago, it would have been hard to imagine that JavaScript (JS) would ever be used outside of the browser. The journey started when Node.js was first released in 2009, allowing JavaScript to be run on the server-side. Intentionally or not, Node.js opened up JavaScript to all new purposes, such as building robots, controlling drones, and even writing native mobile apps.

Learn about five surprising and creative ways that software developers are using JavaScript to think outside the box.

  1. JavaScript and robots

Recently, more and more developers have been playing around with hardware, using parts such as Arduino boards to build custom robots. Turns out there are groups within the JavaScript community that are really interested in robotics, and they put in a lot of effort into building custom robots with the programming language. One such community is Nodebots. They hold meetups all over the world, where developers can get together, learn more, and hack on robots using JavaScript.

  1. Flying drones

If building robots from scratch isn’t your thing but you’re still interested in controlling stuff in the real world using JavaScript, then why not explore the booming world of Drone Flying? If you’re interested in making your own drone take off using JavaScript, you should know that it doesn’t take much effort. Download the ar-drone NPM package, type a few lines of code, and your drone will be flying in no time!

  1. Virtual Reality

Another technology gaining traction is virtual reality (VR) headsets such as the Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear and Google Cardboard. And while writing 3D maps for VR headsets sounds really hard, it doesn’t have to be. There is an open source framework called A-Frame that allows developers to write VR experiences using JavaScript and HTML.  Imagine creating 3D scenes using HTML markup that works across desktop, mobile devices and VR headsets.

  1. Native Mobile Apps

There’s nothing new about writing mobile apps within webviews, but let’s face it, it’s not really native. That’s why projects such as NativeScript and React Native were created. Developers who are already familiar with JS can now write actual native mobile applications for iOS, Android and Windows Phones. This allows apps written in JavaScript to stay blazing fast and able to access all of the native APIs.

If you’ve been considering writing native mobile apps but have been weary of learning a new programming language, fear no more! JS is here to save the day once again.

  1. Operating systems

NodeOS is an operating system written entirely in Javascript (JS). Yes, you read that correctly; somebody wrote an entire operating system using JS. Now, if that hasn’t blown your mind, wait until you find out that the only way to install packages into this operating system is through NPM. The project’s aim is to run on real hardware such as desktops and laptops, as well as cloud providers like Amazon Web Services. What started out as a fun proof-of-concept project has grown into something real.

While these five uses  might seem difficult at first, one of the amazing things about JS is that it is still a beginner-friendly language, with an active and helpful community. This is readily apparent on JavaScript.com, a free resource that helps both beginners learn JS and keeps advanced developers up to date with the latest news in the community.

New Android Operating System takes off!

September 3, 2016 by Julie McGrath

Google is releasing the new version of Android – to some people.

The company has allowed people to play with Android 7.0 ahead of its release, and it was first unveiled in June

Android Nougat is being sent out to people’s phones around the world.

It will initially arrive on Google’s own Nexus devices first, and soon arrive on the upcoming LG V20. Other phones will have to wait until their carriers and manufacturers decide to make it available – potentially leaving them open to big security problems.

The new version of Android brings new features including better battery life, more emojis and virtual reality compatibility that sits alongside a whole host of VR tools.

Google said that there are more than 250 major new features in the newest version of Android, which is officially version 7.0.

But the primary new tools include expanded emoji, quick settings controls that can be easily accessed to change settings and the ability to run two apps side-by-side. It also has new battery tools, which allow the phone to drop into a special lower power usage mode that will let it last for longer.

It also brings new security features, meant to make Android better at keeping data private. Many of those features are locked to new devices, but they allow phones to automatically store information in the background and make sure that files are encrypted so they can’t easily be read by people.

Some people have already been able to use those features, since Google this year allowed developers to try out the software before it was actually released. That should have allowed them to ensure that apps are all up to date for the new operating system, making it run more smoothly from the off.

For everyone else, the software will roll out gradually. All of the recent Nexus devices will be updated over-the-air, and others will come with time.

Considering an IT Career?

August 30, 2016 by Julie McGrath

Whether you are looking for your first job or are in need a career change, many people are opting to start an IT Career.

There are so many different IT Career routes you can explore, from software design right through to game testing. It helps that IT jobs are also currently high in demand, especially IT contractors and freelancers.

Careers in IT deal with the design, creation, management and maintenance of the varied components of the system, including software, hardware, networks, systems integration and multimedia. Broadly, information technology can be divided into four central pathways: network systems, information support and services, programming and software development, and Web and digital communication. Down each career avenue exist a huge amount of occupational opportunities, ranging from database administrator to computer systems engineer, digital media specialist to systems analyst.

Here is a list of starting pointers if you are new to the IT Industry and wondering how you can get onto the IT Career ladder.

  1. List the IT work you would be interested in.It is important to find a career you are passionate about. There are a large number of IT jobs available, so you should narrow down your choice in order to give yourself a specific focus.
  2. Network and apprenticeships.Get to know IT professionals in your area and learn how they have managed to establish themselves in the industry. You can also set up apprenticeships in order to gain valuable advice and guidance during your career move.
  3. Gain IT qualifications.Have a look in your local area for any educational opportunities that could give you an opportunity to achieve essential skills for your future career. Any professional certifications will highlight your knowledge and capabilities to future employers.
  4. Experience and internships.Of course, if you don’t want to go into education, you can gain your experience and skills from entry level positions or internships. A portfolio or CV demonstrating previous employment in the industry will also show your competence in the field, similar to IT qualifications.
  5. Constructing your CV.Your CV is often your first chance to show organisations your capability. Therefore, you should clearly pinpoint your relevant experience, skills and experience, and also highlight your enthusiasm for your chosen profession.
